Maternal Stress During Pregnancy Connected with Childhood Asthma

Mothers who experience significant stress while pregnant are more likely to have children with asthma, indicates research from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in Bilthoven.

The findings could be particularly beneficial to Hispanic children who areΒ disproportionately affectedΒ by asthma according to the Office of Minority Health. When compared to non-Hispanic whites, Hispanic children are 40 percent more likely to die from asthma.

Approximately 3,600,000 Hispanics in the United States report they currently have asthma, with Puerto Rican Americans twice as likely to have asthma compared to the overall Hispanic population. Hispanics are 30 percent more likely to visit the hospital for asthma, as compared to non-Hispanic whites.

Of the Hispanic subgroups, Puerto Rican children are 3.2 times more likely to have asthma, as compared to non-Hispanic Whites, and overall, Hispanic children are 40 percent more likely to die from asthma.
