Libertarian fantasies and corporate health care will kill you

Not only are these sentences profound, but they reveal why Trump and his minions could not respond to covid and why the folks in OC revolted against masks and why Southwestern America is about to see avoidable deaths. (italics mine)

It also uncovers the cultural and political lies that let fester the racism, poverty, stress and disarray that contribute so much to the epidemic of child abuse.

"The (covid) pandemic has revealed, in the most profound way possible, the interconnectedness of a society that has always been intoxicated by libertarian fantasies of absolute autonomy and self-reliance. A public health crisis demands precisely the kind of collective action that American political culture demonizes as “socialism.” Americans do not like being forced to contemplate the possibility that one of our most profoundly personal qualities or experiences—our physical health—is dependent on that of our neighbors. Our health care system is organized around the privatization of risk and the legitimacy of profiting from the sick individual. A public health crisis demands the recognition that health is a public good—even a commons. It cannot be addressed without some form of social solidarity. That is inarguably true - even “herd immunity,” for example, is unavoidably a collective state"  --

"could not respond" - This is a matter of one's own opinion.  Not to mention that what state one resides had the biggest impact.  State's have been asking to be able to run themselves and when they are allowed, such as in this case, many of them did not do well.  This had nothing to do with who the president was.

Yes,opinion, but also values. The individualistic go it alone and the "damn the the feeble and the others" attitude is a curse. As a doc I really cannot care for an abused child, a pregnant mom, or a feeble elderly man without concerned community support. As a country we lost track of this, of our collective humanity. Trump is not the cause but a symptom, nonetheless the result is 70,000 unnecessary deaths.
