Leader of Women and Children’s Horizons is advocacy veteran

Ballo: “To me, women’s (and by extension family) health and safety issues are closely aligned. Domestic violence and sexual assault are crimes. They are also public health issues. The research, most notably the adverse childhood experience studies done by the Centers for Disease Control, demonstrates how violence impacts the individual, family and community over a lifespan. My work has evolved as the criminal justice and public health systems have recognized the complexity of domestic and sexual violence. For example, in the 1980’s, when we served a victim of domestic violence, we looked at the victim only. Today, there is great research and many programs, such as the one here at WCH, which focus on children who witness domestic violence. Additionally, many children are victims of sexual violence, generally by a person known to them.”
