LA County Supervisors pledge $51.1 million to reduce homelessness [DailyNews.com]

One week after the city of Los Angeles vowed $100 million in new funding to battle a “state of emergency” on homelessness, Los Angeles County supervisors pledged $51 million Tuesday to fund its own initiative.

County officials identified $51.1 million in surplus revenue from the last fiscal year’s budget to spend on programs and services for the county’s homeless population. The funding was unanimously approved Tuesday through the passage of this year’s supplemental budget. The specifics of the programs and services will be developed over the course of a series of 18 policy meetings that will launch this week.

Although the timing of the roll-out of its plan follows L.A. city officials’ announcement, officials said the county’s plans to tackle homelessness have been in the works for months and that the county’s Homeless Initiative was launched in August.

“Today’s action is really the end result of funding a planning process that has been long underway and long been championed by the board,” said county spokesman David Sommers.
