Kids on the Brink: Mental Health in Iowa

"Kids on the brink are often too dangerous to live at home. And there are some that are so challenging to treat, that there isn’t even a facility for them in the state of Iowa. These children could have genetic factors that cause their behaviors, but there’s a growing body of evidence that shows many of these cases could have been lessened, if not prevented, if their early lives had been different....

"Generally caused by some sort of trauma, usually early on in life, usually before age 5,” Cindy explained.“We know that a high percentage of the kids that present in, especially the young range like 5 to 10, 12 year old, psychiatric units there’s a high percentage of them that have had traumatic experiences and those traumatic experiences we know are highly correlated with psychiatric disorders, as well as other health problems and even shorter life spans,” said Kent Jackson with St. Luke’s Behavioral Health....

"No facility in Iowa can treat his reactive attachment disorder. So his treatment is five hours away in Missouri ... At a cost to taxpayers of more than $100,000 a year. There are 33 kids Iowa can’t treat within its borders. So it pays millions to send them to psychiatric medical institutions for children in places like New Mexico...."
