Kansas Education Commissioner Randy Watson saw Friday morning just how far apart Faris Elementary School is from Plum Creek Elementary School.

On the map, Buhler USD 313’s Plum Creek is about 3.2 miles from Hutchinson USD 308’s Faris.

Watson visited both schools and knows the schools, less than 10 minutes apart, aren’t even close.

“Very different,” he said.

“That’s true of Kansas,” Watson said of variances found between the schools. That’s part of the challenge of crafting statewide policies that apply to all schools, he noted.

Watson is the longtime superintendent of McPherson USD 418 who became the state’s top K-12 school official in July. “I try to get out a couple times a week,” he said, and visit schools, often with the area’s State Board of Education member on the tour, too.

On Friday morning, Watson and State Board of Education member Ken Willard, Hutchinson, toured Plum Creek and Faris.
