Join the ACEs and Nourishment Community on ACEs Connection

Hello! I’m one of the Community Managers for the ACES and Nourishment Community on ACES Connection.

Along with my co-manager, Adrienne Markworth, I am excited to launch this community where anyone can share research, articles, stories and ideas about the connections between food, eating, nutrition, obesity and ACES. As many of you know, the foundational ACES research emerged from an investigation into why participants in an obesity program were dropping out despite initially losing weight. It uncovered how participants' childhood trauma histories affected their weight, risk for metabolic or diet-related disease, relationship to food, and eating habits.  We hope that this community can continue understanding what Adverse Childhood and Community Experiences has to do with food habits and dietary health. We also hope to explore how positive experiences with food can provide an opportunity for healing, build resilience, and support a healthy relationship to food.

How to be Part of this Community:

We know you all have a lot to add to this important conversation, so please join us in this learning community by sharing articles, discussing research, or starting a conversation. Invite others who want to explore this topic with us.

this is TOTALLY AWESOME... I designed and co-managed a program in Ithaca, New York (Green Guerrillas Youth Media Tech Collective) that connected these same dots without the benefit of trauma-informed language and theory in the early 2000s... working with court-involved youth and highlighting the connection between health, wellth, renewable energy, and sustainability... organic food for snacks, gardening projects, a bio-bus (grease car), and farm-to-fork dinners were just some of the many, regularly scheduled activities... and we successfully diverted all but one teen away from further involvement in the justice system, while encouraging healthier food choices throughout an entire community... so much can be said for re-connecting with the natural world to support life-affirming resiliency practices, and I am thankful and grateful to be here (now also a raw vegan chef, and still doing the work in criminal/environmental justice)
