In Rural Ohio, An Opioid Crisis Becomes A Meth Crisis [npr.org]

Vinton County, Ohio was hit hard by the opioid epidemic. But now, as opioids are becoming harder to obtain, more and more users are turning to cheap methamphetamine.

RACHEL MARTIN, HOST:

We're going to spend some time now in a place called Vinton County, Ohio. There are only about 13,000 people. McArthur is the county seat. And the big talk of the town now is the new grocery store that recently opened because, up until a few months ago, it was easier to buy opioids here than it was to buy fresh produce. It didn't take us long to get a glimpse into what that means when we visited a couple of weeks ago.

MIKE: Well, we've had a lot of walk-ins. But that's the first, I think, near-death OD I've had here in a parking lot.

Heard this story yesterday. It is heartbreaking. Little kids go hungry, piled together on mattresses on the floor while the adults get high. How can we possibly expect the children to do anything different when they are 10, 11, 12?

High ACE scores lead to trauma lead to addiction lead to trauma lead to addiction.

Breaking the cycle is going to take a lot. AND we must start somewhere.

Love the children. Love the people who’re addicted until they can love themselves. Be an adult who makes a difference in the lives of children and the people who’re addicted.  We need home services in communities and communities that have a sense of community β€” quickly β€” before too many people forget the simple joys of being together, playing softball, playing.
