Local educators and school staff members have a better idea of how to identify and help traumatized students as the school season quickly approaches.

"Before we used to look at them and think they were acting up because you know, they're bad kids or something. Well, that's not the case. You got to know the background what are they bringing to school each day and if you understand that then its easier to deal with that and to help the kids," said USD 501 spokesperson Ron Harbaugh.

Topeka USD 501 held its Back to School kickoff event for teachers, counselors, principals, and staff at the Topeka Performing Arts Center on Friday morning.

A documentary called "Paper Tigers" was shown to the nearly 2,000 people who attended. The film takes a close look at a Walla Walla, Washington, high school's approach to discipline and how understanding and treatment is showing promise to students with adverse childhood experiences.
