These are two very well explanations. The first link http://gobbelcounseling.wordpress.com/2013/06/13/trauma-doesnt-tell-time/ gives good explanation how some information in our brains is recalled (what most of us call memory) while other information is remembered by the brain ... even years after it occurred ... and how even good parenting and a loving environment can't erase those from the brain.
