Illinois Creates Independent Ombudsman Office to Protect Youth in Prison and on Aftercare [ModelsForChange.net]

Illinois has joined a growing number of states with juvenile ombudsman programs intended to help protect the rights of youth in custody.

“It is essential for the safety of our incarcerated children that these public facilities be subject to independent inspection and monitoring,” said Elizabeth Clarke, President of the Juvenile Justice Initiative, a non-profit coalition of reform advocates. “The creation of an ombudsman is a necessary step toward ensuring safety and transparency of our juvenile institutions."
