Hooper Bay Suicides

FBPostHooperBaySuicides

Last month, Bethel experienced a rash of suicides. This month, Hooper Bay has, too. Since 2008, I have believed we need to change our approach to suicide prevention. The ACE Study found that .9% of the population studied had 7+ ACE's. That cohort attempted suicide at a rate of 35%. 330 million people in the US multiplied by .9% adds up to 2.97 million. 35% of that number would mean 1.04 million attempts among the cohort. I believe we can identify who is at risk and provide them with better healing protocols. I just can't seem to get the conversation started where it is needed most. I did reach out to the point person on the suicide response in Bethel and didn't hear back. I am advocating (and have been for years) for the conversation to change.
