"Prevent Child Abuse Athens was founded in 1986 by citizens concerned about high rates of child abuse in Athens. The organization searched for ways to support parents before any abuse occurred, realizing that some parents had experienced abuse themselves, and would benefit from education about child development and positive discipline. PCAA also learned that substance abuse is closely connected with child abuse and realized those parents needed referrals for treatment and possible removal of children, at least temporarily.
"Additionally, PCAA established programs to increase protective factors for children. Support, education and referrals were offered to families and child abuse rates declined. In addition, teen pregnancy rates declined and more children were insured and up to date with shots. This work required the dedication of a community and its citizens...."
