Homeless in Seattle

During a recent stay in Seattle, I lived in homeless shelters for two days, sleeping, eating, and searching for resources to make life comfortable.Β  People who experience homelessness and live on the streets or in shelters experience the results of ACEs everyday, yet have no understanding of its impact on their lives, how to cope with trauma, or what kind of hope the future may bring with recovery.

Downtown Seattle.Β  Many people choose to live outside of shelters, sleeping in parks, alleys, or empty benches.Β  After three days and two nites living, sleeping, eating and just hanging out with part of the Seattle homeless population, I have a new appreciation for what it means to "survive on the streets".Β  Some people livingΒ  in homeless shelters choose to do so because they can't afford housing.Β  There is no education about ACEs in any of the shelters.Β  People are exposed to the concept of "salvation" as being the answer to most emotional, mental, or cognitive problems.Β  In my opinion, this needs to change.Β
