Home visits key to preventing child abuse - Texas

"Texas taxpayers pay a high price for this failure to protect children. In a  recent study by the Centers  for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers found that we spend about  $1.3 million across a lifetime for every child who dies from abuse and more than  $210,000 for an abused child who survives.

"These costs to children and society are not only unacceptable, they are also  unsustainable....

"How can you help? Support prevention legislation and funding now before the  83rd Legislature. Ask your House legislator to support:

"The Senate budget proposal to invest an additional $7.9 million in the Texas  Home Visiting Program.

"SB 426: This legislation provides the framework to ensure that future state  investments are directed toward programs that have evidence supporting their  effectiveness and that the programs are held accountable for outcomes that  benefit Texas children, families and taxpayers.

"SB 1836: This bill helps finance the Texas Home Visiting program through  voluntary donations when copies of birth certificates, marriage licenses and  divorce decrees are purchased."
