Health Watch: Building community resiliency

People develop differently. As infants, we study action and reaction. As children, we embrace a set of morals, attitudes and beliefs. Parents, relatives, and environments teach us various lessons, which create expectations for life. Our world view is developed during childhood. It all depends on our earliest experiences.

Childhood stress affects how we build relationships. It influences how we make life decisions. It sets future standards for how we act. Low-stress surroundings are defined as protective environments. A child raised in this circumstance may be easily calmed, laid back and relationship-oriented. The opposite of this is a toxic environment. This type of environment would involve high amounts of stress and insecure, chaotic lifestyles.

A child raised in the latter might become impulsive or hyper-vigilant. He or she may also grow to be withdrawn or emotionally detached. These are not negative things. In either situation, the brain is focused on only one thing: survival.
