"When people think of juvenile justice, drumming probably doesn’t come to mind. However, an innovative program called DRUMBEAT is utilizing hand drumming to facilitate social interaction and develop relationship skills, providing youths with life skills to make a change upon their release.

"DRUMBEAT (Discovering Relationships Using Music—Beliefs, Emotions, Attitudes and Thoughts) was developed in Australia by Simon Faulkner, who believes that networks of support are critical to prevent criminal activity. Therefore, he developed the program to emphasize relationship themes by having the youths work as a team and share a common goal of giving a great final performance that concludes the program...."
