Group offers mental health services for South Mississippi kids

"Mississippi Children's Home Services is trying to get the word out about its programs and services available to get children early mental-health care to avoid problems down the road.

"The group is hoping to fight the stigma around mental health care and combat the fact many mental health problems go untreated. It promotes early intervention....

"These long-term health-care costs that we're paying for adults, if you trace it back, can be linked to early adverse childhood events," Damon said. " … We want to advocate for kids to get identified early and treated early."

The group handles a lot of state contracts. About 96 percent of its funding comes from the government, but the group wants to raise more private-sector money and get help from businesses...."
