Feeling 'Invisible' — How Mental Illness Often Goes Unnoticed In The Classroom [WAMU.org]

In the span of just a few months, Katie went from honor roll to F’s on her report card. She remembers that time as she walks through the playground at her old elementary school in Prince George’s County, Maryland. She’s watching wistfully as kids dart in and out of the swing set and monkey bars. This place brings back a lot of bad memories.

“I used to stand over there against the brick wall and just see everybody else have fun. I was jealous seeing everyone else on the playground," she says.

Katie is 18 now. When she was 8 she had to transfer to a different school in the middle of the year. She went from having lots of friends to being the “new” kid who knew no one./p>

“At recess, I didn’t have friends to play with. I would make an excuse to stay inside with the teachers and finish extra work or do extra credit," she says.
