Exposing Kids to Violence can impact their health as adults

"Spring is also the time we lament the need to conduct a Children’s Exposure to Violence Prevention and Awareness Week (this year it’s April 15-19).

"The purpose of this week, of course, is to make people aware of the magnitude of the problem of children’s exposure to violence. The enormity of this problem wasn’t fully appreciated until about five years ago. Researchers conducted a national survey asking children (or their caregivers), from birth through 17 years, about their exposure to violence in their home, school and community. They found that 60 percent of the children and adolescents had been exposed to violence either directly or indirectly in the past year. It was also common for youth to be exposed to more than one type of violence...."
