Encouraging positive expression among youth (Beloit, WI)

While it may sound like an unusual partnership, nevertheless, the Beloit Fine Arts Incubator and the Rock County Youth Services Center have joined forces to present an additional exhibit this month.

As a result, on display through Friday at the incubator, 520 E. Grand Ave., are several drawings and paintings created by court ordered adjudicated youth.

The Juvenile Justice and Prevention Services Division (JJPSD) implemented several changes a few years ago in Rock County and most improvements were directed towards the Youth Services Center, formerly the Juvenile Detention Center, said Carrie Gerber, youth services specialist and officer in the JJPSD.

Staff at the Youth Services Center underwent extensive training on the topics of behavioral management, crisis intervention, trauma-informed care and more. The focus at the facility moved away from punitive more toward treatment oriented programming.
