Encore History. Culture. Trauma. Podcast with Candice Valenzuela: What if Self-Care isn't the Answer? Thursday, 1 p.m. PT

(Warning: There is strong language in this episode.)

As we move into the month of September, PACEs Connection is taking a break.

Our staff will be on a retreat next week and will celebrate Labor Day the following week. We will be taking the next two weeks to restore ourselves. We will engage in self and collective care.

In honor of Labor Day, PACEs Connection CEO Ingrid Cockhren has chosen one of her favorite past podcasts for an encore this week.  It is her conversation with Candice Valenzuela, in which they ask, "What if self-care isn't the answer?"

Screen Shot 2023-08-22 at 7.32.25 PM“Self-care has become a buzzword when discussing solutions to the mental health crisis in BIPOC communities,” says Cockhren. “But is it enough to mitigate the impact of systemic racism, intergenerational poverty, and historical trauma?”

Cockhren and Valenzuela dig deep for insights concerning the need for collective care to heal our society.

Valenzuela, who describes herself as a “parent, a pet owner, a friend, a survivor, a geek, and a nature lover,” says, “I have learned that no professional titles will ever reflect all of who I am or my worth. I strive to be human before I strive to be a worker. I identify as Black, Indigenous, Queer and working-class allied.

“Professionally, I have been working at the crossroads of education, justice and community healing for 16 years. I have extensive experience in mindfulness, trauma informed care, anti-oppressive practices, cultural competency, liberatory education and youth empowerment,” she adds.

Valenzeula holds a bachelor’s degree in humanities, an master’s degree in East-West psychology, and a 200-hour certificate in mindful yoga through the Niroga Institute.
