Early support an important building block to family success [ABCNewsPapers.com]

Ethan’s face lights up when he hears Gina Hatanpa’s voice.

Just waking up from a nap, the 19-month-old was cuddled, shyly and sleepily, in the crook of his mom Mylee Workman’s neck.

But by the time Hatanpa takes off her coat, Ethan is ready – goofing off, trading smiles and silly faces, playing with the zippers of her briefcases. He clearly adores the weekly visits.

Hatanpa is a registered and public health nurse with Anoka County. She has been visiting Workman once a week for more than two years, since Workman was three months pregnant with Ethan as part of the Healthy Families America program. One of the county’s home visiting programs was recently accredited by the national organization.

Hatanpa currently works with 15 families and is one of five public health nurses administering the Healthy Families America program as part of Anoka County Community Health and Environmental Services Family Home Visiting Programs.
