Delaware strengthens focus on trauma treatment

Delaware was “late to the table” in its understanding and grasp of trauma-informed care for those with behavioral and mental health problems, according to Leslie Brower, who is directing the state’s effort to change its approach.

But now – in the third year of a five-year project to turn that tide – Brower says the state’s efforts offer hope to those for whom trauma has brought a “cascade of trouble.”

Brower spoke Thursday at the “Inspiring Hope” conference of Delaware’s chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Health.

She pointed to Kaiser Permanente’s expansive Adverse Childhood Experiences study that revealed the comprehensive impact of trauma – anxiety, fear, anger, sleep and eating disorders, unemployment, relationship problems, substance abuse and premature death. Some studies suggest genetic changes that, if untreated, can be passed along to future generations, she said. Lives can be twisted, shortened and lost because of untreated trauma.
