Cycle of Trauma

As I sit here thinking about an elementary school classmate who recently passed away, I wonder about many of the other young boys who attended school with me.  Many of them seemed pretty angry and would explode at the drop of a dime.  I was thinking to myself, why was that the norm?  Why didn't people notice the anger in the children?  Why were they so angry anyway?  A child should have a joyful and pleasant disposition because they should be worry free.  Now, as I educate youth, I see the damaging affects of childhood trauma on kids.  They have witnessed so much in their young lives and do not understand, themselves, the implications of what they've experienced and seen.  What do we do since that tends to be so pervasive in impoverished neighborhoods?  Poverty is a major player in these issues.  Just thinking...

I'm so sorry for your loss. These ACEs are just epidemic.

The podcast I just posted is talking about this very issue. I hope you get a chance to listen to it. They cover the anger in children, poverty, etc.  The Education Gap [transcript and audio] - (50 min) Michigan.

Also, Tavis Smiley has done some shows addressing education and ACEs. We have a video and podcast here. The podcast features Dr. Vincent Felitti (AC member) and co-principal investigator of the ACE Study and a California legislator who is trying to draw attention to these issues.
