Congress must reauthorize CAPTA or the federal program ends.

Action Alert: Contact Your Senators and Representatives About CAPTA on December 15!

Contact your members of Congress to tell them to reauthorize the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act. The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) is a critically important federal program that funds interventions to help children when they have been seriously harmed, as well as family support services which prevent child abuse and neglect from occurring in the first place. It is essential that Congress reauthorize CAPTA before the end of the year, and with time running short, we need your help letting your senators and representatives know to take action.

On Thursday, December 15, advocates across the country will hold a CAPTA day of action. Please take a few minutes to call or email your senators and representatives to urge them to reauthorize this important program by the end of the year. Please also help us spread the word by forwarding this to your networks!

Subject line: Children and Families Need You to Pass CAPTA ReauthorizationDear Senator/Representative [insert name]:

As your constituent, I urge you to ensure that Congress reauthorizes the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA). CAPTA is foundational to our nation’s system for preventing and addressing child abuse and neglect. It supports interventions to protect and respond to children after they have been seriously harmed, as well as family support services which prevent child abuse and neglect from occurring in the first place. It has not been reauthorized since 2010. Both the House and Senate have developed strong bipartisan reauthorization bills that will help children and families in our state. They include provisions that increase the program’s accountability, strengthen the law’s focus on prevention, and help to reduce fatalities. Reauthorizing this important program will help thousands of children and families in our state.

[Insert more information about CAPTA’s impact in the state, including information about your work, if possible.]

I hope that [insert state] can count on you to help ensure CAPTA is reauthorized this year. If you have any questions or would like more information about CAPTA’s impact in our state, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Thank you,

[Insert name, organization, and location]
