Community Members Gather to Fight Adverse Childhood Experiences - Iowa

"In late March, a total of 220 people, representing over 100 organizations, attended a community forum in Cedar Rapids and heard about research surrounding Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)....

"The event was organized by United Way of East Central Iowa and happened in partnership with the Iowa Department of Public Health and with support from Climate Engineers, St. Luke’s Hospital, Mercy Medical Center and Holmes Murphy. Continuing education credit was also offered by the  Cedar Rapids Medical Education Foundation for medical professionals....

“The fact that Iowa’s Cedar Rapids is aware of the impact of ACEs is exciting to see and hear,” one attendee said in the survey. “There is potential for collaboration to positively impact our community and change the trajectory of the citizens of our state.”

“As a United Way, we hope that all of us together can improve our children’s lives by reducing ACEs,” said United Way’s Ms. Vavra. Or as one attendee said: “Get the word out! If you can’t address it publicly, you can’t move forward.”

"United Way is holding six monthly conversations to move the discussion forward."
