COMMENTARY: Camden can become America's healing center [CourierPostOnline.com]

I see a Camden that is renowned for healing, a city that becomes known for creativity, imagination and discovery. I see a city where the people have the tools to heal themselves, each other, and their neighborhoods. People come from around the world to learn about how our community adopted a culture that enables us to recognize adversity and injury in all forms and work together to recover. I believe the opportunity to begin healing is now.

How is this possible? Camden is known for being one of America's poorest and violent cities. It is extraordinary to know that 80 percent of Camden's children and 42.6 percent of the entire population live below the poverty line. Related to poverty is adversity, and that's off the charts here.

What we are coming to understand without doubt is that prolonged exposure to adversity and to the stress hormones it creates are toxic to the body. Human beings are not built for such prolonged saturation in these hormones. In fact, our brains become pickled ā€” they quite literally form differently because pathways are created by toxic brine.
