Just because Aitkin County doesn’t have a brick-and-mortar mental health center for children with mental health problems doesn’t mean the county does not have good children’s mental health support.

That is the message Sue Tange, Aitkin County Social Services supervisor, children and family services, is trying to get out to the public.

Jessi Schultz, children’s mental health social worker, is the lone social worker at the county, focusing solely on children’s mental health.

“I try to keep my schedule clear so I can focus on the mental health of children,” said Schultz.

It is Schultz’s job to take calls and referrals from families, schools and medical personnel and connect the child with services needed. While the county does not diagnose children with mental illness, Tange said the county helps to find that service.
