Millions of children live in families with a parent or caregiver who has an alcohol or opioid use disorder. Often the focus is on the adults, and the children are forgotten. Due to the high risk for experiencing ACEs, these children are vulnerable to lifelong negative mental and physical health consequences. Early prevention and intervention are key for addressing this systemic issue. Proven, trauma-sensitive, culturally informed educational support programs in mainstream settings that address the unmet needs of children to mitigate the impact of ACEs are essential.
