Child hunger a complex problem - South Carolina

More than four out of 10 elementary students in Greenville County Schools come from families whose income qualifies them for free lunches, according to district figures.

For a family of three, that’s an annual income of $25,389 or less.

Add in the kids whose families live on 130 percent to 185 percent of the poverty line and nearly half — 49.5 percent — qualify for free or reduced price meals, according to the most recent figures from the school district, tabulated at the end of the 2012-13 school year.

That’s more than 19,000 children who, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, are in a situation in which having enough to eat is never a sure thing.
