Child abuse reports in Pennsylvania rise to record high

"In a report released Monday, the state Department of Public Welfare said there were 26,664 reports of child abuse or neglect in 2012, an increase of 2,286 (9.4 percent) over the previous year.Ā 

"We cannot say for sure why there is a large increase, but we do know that there has been a surge in awareness of and conversations around child abuse in Pennsylvania, which is a very positive step toward curbing and reporting abuse," Acting Secretary of Public Welfare Beverly D. Mackereth said in a statement.

"Of those reports, state officials said 3,565 were substantiated, an increase of 157 over last year, state officials said...."
