Breaking the Link Between Childhood Trauma and Poor Health [kqed.org]

About 10 years ago, in her Bayview-Hunters Point clinic, Dr. Nadine Burke Harris examined a 7-year-old boy who was the height and weight of a 4-year-old. When she discovered that he had stopped growing after he was sexually abused, Harris started drawing connections with her other patients. She noticed that childhood trauma and adverse experiences negatively affected health. In her book “The Deepest Well,” Burke Harris explores the connection between poor health and toxic stress during childhood, and considers how kids can be healed.

Guests:

Nadine Burke Harris, founder and CEO, Center for Youth Wellness; author, “The Deepest Well: Healing the Long-Term Effects of Childhood Adversity”

The Deepest Well says to me that every child and family needs access to a caring medical doctor as well as a trauma-informed behavioral health care provider. Working for universal access to such care must become the priority of all of us working to prevent childhood trauma and maltreatment.
