"Beyond the Wall" Talks About Trauma in the Prison System Through Art

photo 4The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Restorative Justice program has set up an installation at Drexel University to begin a dialogue about issues among the prison population in the United States. The installation is a series of mural panels that are drawn from interviews with inmates at SCI Graterford, a maximum security prison. Eric Okdeh, a muralist and Mural Arts instructor, conducted the interviews and took pictures of inmates through the Restorative Justice program at the prison to create the series. Three of the panels at the Drexel University installation, pictured here, directly talk about the effects of trauma and how it impacts individuals, communities, and wellbeing.

Though the installation is no longer open to the public, the "mini murals" will be affixed to boarded-up windows in highly visible areas around Philadelphia in the coming months. You can also view the full series on the Mural Arts website and check out the hashtag #beyondthewall to follow the project.
