Be Alert for PTSD After Pregnancy Loss [Consumer.HealthDay.com]

Post-traumatic stress disorder can develop in women after pregnancy loss, a new British study finds.

Women who suffer a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy should be routinely screened for PTSD and receive mental health support, the researchers said.

"We were surprised at the high number of women who experienced symptoms of PTSD after early pregnancy loss," said study lead author Jessica Farren, of the department of surgery and cancer at Imperial College London.

"At the moment, there is no routine follow-up appointment for women who have suffered a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy," Farren said. "We have checks in place for [postpartum] depression, but we don't have anything in place for the trauma and depression following pregnancy loss," she said in a college news release.

Robert Olcott: Trauma arises from situations where one's autonomy is lost, one's voice is not heard, and one's trust in the world that everything is okay is violated. So I would argue that when women can exercise a choice for themselves (vs. choices that other people make for them) they are less likely to be traumatized.

And while losing a wanted pregnancy is heartbreaking, it doesn't normally result in PTSD.

I am wondering if similar reactions occur for women who elect to terminate an ['unwanted'] pregnancy.

Perhaps the 'partners' of women who elect to terminate an 'unwanted' pregnancy, who concur with their woman partner's decision, and who support them in that decision, also contend with either immediate or 'delayed' [later] PTSD, too!

It would certainly seem relevant to the issue/task of "Generativity"....
