Announcing!!! Pilot Trauma-Informed Care Learning Collaborative for I/DD Organizations

The Traumatic Stress Institute (TSI), a leader in supporting organizational transformation to trauma-informed care (TIC), is excited to announce a 12- to 16-month Pilot Learning Collaborative for I/DD organizations interested in implementing trauma-informed care. The Learning Collaborative will begin in Spring 2021.

One study found that, compared to children without disabilities, children with moderate to severe I/DD were 2.9 time more likely to be emotionally abuse, 3.4 times more likely to be physically abused, 5.3 times more likely to be neglected, and 6.4 times more likely to endure sexual abuse (Spencer et al.,2005). Another discovered that 31% of children with I/DD suffered child maltreatment compared to 9% of nondisabled children (Sullivan and Knudsen (2000).

In the last 10 years, increased attention has been paid in the I/DD field to trauma and people with I/DD including how trauma symptoms manifest, making accurate diagnoses, and providing mental health treatment. However, much less attention has been paid to organization-level interventions such as implementation of TIC (Kessler, 2014).  Organizations are wanting to know:

  • How can we shift away from well-meaning but harmful practices that unintentionally replicate environments where people with I/DD were hurt?
  • How can we train direct service professionals (DSPs) about the critical importance of relationships in improving the quality of life for people with I/DD?
  • How can we address DSP’s widespread burnout and high rates of turnover that negatively impact their relationships with those they support?

TSI is uniquely positioned to convene this Learning Collaborative having helped more than 70 organizations across North America embed TIC into the fabric of their organizations. A Learning Collaborative is a well-known, evidenced-based method for spreading best practice where organizations learn together from experts, assist their peer organizations in the change process, and hold each other accountable.
