An education in justice [MonroeMonitor.com]

It looked like any other college class — students clustered together, organizing information and exchanging ideas — all while preparing their final presentations. Outside, the walls were topped with razor wire, but inside, the synergy was palpable, honest and filled with promise.

For four weeks, 11 University of Washington students visited the Twin Rivers Unit (TRU) at the Monroe Correctional Complex (MCC), to participate in collaborative work-study sessions with a group of seven TRU students involved in the educational Bridges to HOPE program. The visits were part of Education Inside Prison, a UW honors class that gives students the opportunity to visit the prison every Wednesday and gain insight into the unique challenges faced by justice-involved individuals as they learn to navigate prison life and eventually attempt to reintegrate into society.

Starting in July, UW students partnered with TRU students to craft comprehensive proposals for sustainable projects that could be implemented to help increase offender success and lower recidivism.
