Agencies: Trauma can impact law enforcement officers - Kentucky

"Several law enforcement agencies have a policy for officers who experience the traumatic event of firing their weapon or being fired upon. The Kentucky State Police, for example, will put any trooper involved in a shooting on leave — not as a punishment, but so the trooper can get an evaluation by a mental health professional for stress.

"But an incident involving a shooting is probably the least common stressful event faced by law enforcement officers. As part of an officer's daily patrol duty, he or she will be called to auto wrecks involving death or serious injury, assaults, incidents of child abuse and neglect and suicides."
