Advocates push for tougher laws against domestic violence

NEW ORLEANS — From 2010 to 2012, 178 women in Louisiana died due to domestic violence

Louisiana ranks among the top five states with the highest number of domestic violence cases. The most recent victim was Barbara Baker, of Houma. She died Friday in a hostage situation.

Today, advocates for stronger laws against domestic violence say enough is enough.

Friday's hostage situation in Houma shined new light on domestic violence laws in the state, particularly when it comes to firearms restrictions.

Police said Baker, 22, was killed after her boyfriend, 22-year-old Skylleur Hayes, of Thibodaux, barricaded himself inside a home, and held Baker and their infant son hostage. Baker was shot in the head after police negotiated the release of their 1-year-old child.

Hayes was pronounced dead at the scene.
