Advocates educate medical professionals to assist victims of domestic violence - Illinois

"Experts say a key strategy to short-circuiting domestic violence is by educating health care professionals on when and how to address the topic with their patients.
“Those involved in health care don’t always know where to refer a victim,” said Susan Grossman associate dean and professor at Loyola University’s School of Social Work.
“So, they don’t ask about domestic violence, because they can’t help. Emotional abuse is a form of domestic violence that some people don’t take seriously enough and many health care officials don’t know how to ask patients about that, either,” she said.

"Chicago’s Connections for Abused Women and their Children is one organization trying to fill that gap through its Hospital Crisis Intervention Project housed at John Stroger Hospital...."
