98 Domestic Violence Victims Turned Away From Shelters In Single Day (Connecticut)

Whether more battered women are seeking help or the shortage of affordable housing is keeping them in shelters longer, Connecticut's domestic violence network is stretched beyond capacity.

The latest one-day snapshot of life on the domestic violence front tells the story: 855 women and children served; 303 in shelters or transitional housing; and 98 victims who had to be turned away from shelters for lack of space. A third ofthe 98, for at least a brief period, had to return to the abusive situation.

Each year, the National Network to End Domestic Violence takes stock of the problem by asking the states to report on the experience of a single day. The results were released this week.
