2021 - A Big Year In the Literature on Trauma and Developmental Disabilities

If there was ever any doubt that the intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) field is recognizing the critical importance of trauma, three brand new articles in the academic literature published in 2021 have put that to rest. They are all scoping reviews which summarize the professional literature on a particular topic and attempt to synthesize the current state of knowledge.

It was rather stunning that, in the same year that these articles were published, the Traumatic Stress Institute launched the first-of-its-kind Trauma-Informed Care Learning Collaborative for IDD Organizations. And, as you will see, the findings of all three articles strongly support the need for trauma-informed care (TIC) culture change in IDD organizations.

The three articles are:

  1. Cook, S. & Hole, R. (2021). Trauma, intellectual and/or developmental disability, and multiple, complex needs: a scoping review of the literature.
  2. McNally, P., Taggart, L., & Shevlin, M (2021). Trauma experiences of people with intellectual disability and their implications: A Scoping Review.
  3. Ryan, C., Bergin, M, & Wells, J.S. (2021). Work-related stress and well-being of direct care workers in intellectual disability services: A scoping review of the literature.

Click here for a summary of key point and implications of the Cook & Hole (2021) article. We will summarize the other two articles in future posts.
