Despite the fact that nearly one in five American adults will experience a mental health issue in a given year, there’s still a prejudicial attitudesurrounding psychological disorders. That’s why awareness is so crucial.

Monday marked World Mental Health Day, which sparked a global conversation on Twitter about the effects of mental illness. Many people shared personal stories, messages of hope and encouragement to seek treatment ― including celebrities and other public figures.

In an effort to continue the discussion, we rounded up some of the most inspiring World Mental Health Day tweets from notable figures below. They’re a good reminder that if you’re experiencing a mental health condition, you’re certainly not alone.

Strange thing about this post (and general anti-stigma campaigns) for me is talking about mental illness, "psych d/o's - without acknowledging the well known connection & context w/ trauma (ACE's anyone?). Normal reactions to abnormal events. Research is pointing out that when people are informed that someone has a bio based, brain disease (what's wrong) - they tend to react w/ stigma.  But when people are informed about someone's story (what happened) they respond w/ much more empathy and relatedness.  Many reasons that people prefer the biochemical imbalance/life-long meds narrative over the pain & coping strategies/trauma adaptations.  Do we perpetuate stigma by giving labels & othering people? (5 out of 5 of us will experience severe distress.)
