Sarah Coffey: Mental health issues need to be part of school discipline consideration [TulsaWorld.com]

As I read the article “TPS board considers contracts for consultants” (Feb. 2) I couldn’t help but feel like something was missing. As Tulsa Public Schools seeks to address the discipline problems in their classrooms it appears that a consultant experienced in mental health was not considered.

Certainly, experts in education like Kimberly Lewis and Tisha Edwards mentioned in the article are of paramount importance to these matters. However, as a child and adolescent psychiatrist I certainly feel mental health should be considered.

You see, behaviors have meaning and not all behavior has the same meaning. Often, children with discipline problems are suffering from adverse life experiences at home or their own mental illness. In fact, the Trauma and Learning Policy Initiative notes that children who have had adverse life experiences are: 2½ times more likely to fail a grade; more often suspended and expelled, and more often designated to special education.

It never ceases to amaze me that we are still so primitive in our thinking that we care for children's bodies and understand that pain and disability, or lack of mobility, but we cannot fathom emotional or psychological pain and disability. We live in the 21st century with the internet as a normality. Surely we can begin to realize that "just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there." Children's brains need as much care and attention as their bodies. Our laws are so indicative of our mental block: we have criminal charges that protect children's bodies against physical and sexual abuse, but we don't have criminal charges if you hurt a child's mind with emotional abuse. Time for Change. I write about this at length in my book.
