San Diego Unified Launching New Food Recovery Program (timesofsandiego.com)

In an effort to prevent thousands of pounds of leftover school meals from being thrown away, the San Diego Unified School District is set to officially launch a new “food recovery program.”

Dubbed the “Love Food Not Waste Program,” the goal is to divert leftover school meals into local organizations facing food shortages, according to a SDUSD news release.

The Love Food Not Waste Program is a partnership between SDUSD and Feeding San Diego.

Feeding San Diego coordinates with additional local partners, such as the San Diego Rescue Mission and a number of smaller organizations, who are given the opportunity to pick up food surplus from SDUSD school prep kitchens, the news release stated.

Thanks Jim! Absolutely concurring with you, it has always boggled my mind (and hurt my heart) that restaurants, schools, etc. throw away food at the end of the day. At a minimum, it should be composted. Thrilled San Diego Unified School District is a community of practice for other schools to model, my hope is the restaurant industry is soon to follow.

Grateful to hear you were doing the same at Lincoln High in Walla Walla... It's heartbreaking to think there are myriad students and families living in food deserts ~ and our dumpsters are filled with high quality, nutritious food.

Dana, thank you for sharing this incredible article.  Almost every school across the country is throwing food away after each meal, it has never made any sense to me.  San Diego is setting up an incredible model for others to follow.  At Lincoln, I told my cook we weren't going to follow district policy and that I would cover her back with her supervisor  Brooke would make one trip down the hallway and all of the leftovers would be gone.  Students would share, "Thanks Brooke, I'm still hungry, or Thanks, I will save this for tonight".  This is such a huge commitment to San Diego's community that goes hungry.
