Co-Parent Training Helps Kids Adjust to School [PsychCentral.com]

Do you think that this research is a good example of why having people work cross-sector to create trauma-informed communities is important? If teachers knew this, do you think they'd be active in supporting perinatal classes for parents, perhaps even at school for parents of current students who are having their second, third or fourth children.

New research finds that a prenatal program aimed at enhancing couples’ co-parenting relationship helped the parents raise children who were better adjusted and ready for school at age seven.

Pennsylvania State researchers found that teachers reported significantly better adjustment and positive school engagement among children whose parents received the prenatal intervention than in the control children whose parents did not receive the training.

Study findings are reported in the Journal of Family Psychology.

Providing parenting classes is a great idea, as is support for new parents. Wouldn't having someone come in to do the laundry, cleaning, and spell parents for a couple of hours a day reduce stress, too? Doesn't the French government provide this, in addition to long maternity leave?

So many things to say about this.

"Parents who argue and are often in conflict with each other over parenting issues can become more impatient and harsh with their children... Even if parents don’t take out frustration on their children, the emotional security and well-being of the child can be threatened by the presence of conflict in the home."

What about parents who are in conflict with each other, period? I'm surprised this is not one of the ACEs.

And yes, when will the insurance companies connect the dots - ACEs lead to physical and mental illness, so wouldn't it make sense to provide parenting classes as preventive medicine? Hopefully, one of the topics that will be discussed at the Echo Parenting & Education conference in Los Angeles March 5 & 6. Perhaps Jane, you can be the one to raise the question with Dr. Felitti and van der Kolk?!
