Please join us for the ongoing community discussion of "A Better Normal — Education Upended". This week special guest Roberto Rivera will join us to discuss raising up youth voice in education as we re-imagine the future of school.
Roberto Rivera is a member of the Social and Emotional Learning Group at the University of Illinois at Chicago. As a doctoral student at UIC, he currently research interests include the convergence of SEL, Equity, and Youth Voice. His research has been published in the Journal of Education for Students Placed At Risk; Journal for Social Action in Counseling and Psychology; and in 2019 he published a chapter called Understanding and Practicing Cultural Competence in Helping Youth Thrive in a book entitled Keeping Youth Safe and Helping them Thrive" edited by David Osher, Matthew Mayer, Rob Jaegers, and Kimberly Kendziora.
Weekly themes include: How do we create physical and psychological safety, especially in the face of so much uncertainty? What strategies can we use to create a culture of collective care? How do we implement peer support structures for youth AND adults? What might the first two weeks of school look like with an emphasis on student and adult well-being? How do we manage the transition while acknowledging our collective grief and trauma? How might we build anti-racist schools and keep equity front and center of our policies? In what ways can we lift up and empower youth voices in education?
Our current capacity is 100 participants, so please join us on time and we will enter people until we reach capacity. These will be recorded and available on the ACEsConnection website and YouTube channel. Zoom meeting info below.
