Death Is Stupid, and Other Lessons Children Teach Us About the Inevitable End (onbeing.org)

Christine Cissy White ·
I've been struggling with how to talk with my daughter about what happened in Orlando. Another shooting. More death. Hate. She's heard the news. It's been discussed a bit at school too. But how do I talk to her as my own daughter, in between getting ready for school and dance? What can I say to her about homophobia or even what helps people recover? About what headlines and deaths grab our attention and which ones do not? I admit I'm at a loss. I don't have great words or wisdom or even a...

Divorce During Christmas

Christine Cissy White ·
My home was flooded just weeks before my divorce was final. The ocean spilled over the sea wall and headed down the street carrying telephone poles, patio furniture and boat parts. It was 2 a.m. and I was in my bedroom with the cat as my daughter was with her father on one of her first overnights. I was knee deep in despair. And fear. The ocean pooled around my stairs, foundations and car. Outside, the flood would take my blue Subaru, dog fence and air conditioner. Inside, it was thr heating...

Echo Training and Certification Course

Louise Godbold ·
In the fall, Echo will be rolling out the new Training & Certification Course (TCC) for selected candidates who want to become certified in the Echo trauma-informed, nonviolent parenting curriculum. This is the first time Echo will be offering the certification course since 2016. We've been spending the intervening time systematically revising the old parenting curriculum, bringing it up-to-date with the trauma and resilience information that we are already teaching in the parenting...

Re: Perspective of an adopted Son!

Christine Cissy White ·
Thanks sharing this Matt: You wrote: "This works the same for divorce. Healthy people don't hurt or abandon their children, so what happened to my parents to cause them to abandon me at birth?" Can I ask how you got to this wisdom and perspective? For me, a kid abandoned by one parent, I was just mad for a long time. My compassion and understanding about intergenerational trauma is growing. I still have a range of feelings but hurt/mad isn't the ALL of it. Thanks again for posting here! Cissy

Bravo and thank you, Cissy, for this wonderful piece. So much wisdom being offered through your vulnerability and amazing writing. The whole concept of changing things changes things - YES. And teaching your daughter to not just listen to but communicate with her body - brilliant. And saying trauma therapy should start with attachment - critical advice for sure. Every time I read your writing - I want more! Here's to lots of stay-cations for you. Warm Regards, Donna

Community as Medicine: Generating Resilience (and Funding!) via Clinic-Community Integration 2.0

Elizabeth Markle ·
Healthcare professionals are exhausted. And it doesn’t have to be this way. I’m a psychologist by training, and I study Intentional Community. Quite literally, community shaped by design, rather than by default or by drift. My experience is that in the fields of mental health and primary care, providers are asked, and heroically trying, to meet unmeetable needs – to single-handedly generate and deliver enough care, resources, support, and (yes) even love – to meet the needs of our patients...

Freedom From Trauma – Powerful & Profound Practices To Heal Trauma & Consciously Create The Body, Mind, Spirit You Truly Desire

McKinley McPheeters ·
We are living in complicated and stressful times. What needs to be healed seems more palpable than ever. It feels like the call to release what no longer serves has never been louder and we are feeling that tug at our core. While the founder of The League of Extraordinary People, Alfred White, has been gaining more clarity everyday on this, he was invited to be part of an event, more like a movement, to help others find freedom from what has been holding them back. It is a free, online...

VIDEO TALK: How to Stop Button Pushing: Exit and Wait

Since it’s difficult to act calmly and in control if you are angry or frustrated, the two most important four-letter words to remember are exit and wait. Exiting a heated confrontation before you lose your cool and waiting until you are calmer to enforce the consequence shows great wisdom on your part and it can instantly change your child’s disrespect and other problem behaviors for the better. The Decision that Changed My Life

Joyelle Brandt ·
Four years ago, I decided to start a conversation about the long term impact of childhood abuse. More specifically, about what happens when those abused children grow up and have children of their own. When I had become a parent, I went looking for books on this topic, and I didn’t find anything. But I knew I couldn’t be the only one who was dealing with this. And once I found one other person who was willing to write about this, I said, let’s collect these stories. The stories of these...

How Grateful Are You?

Scarlett Lewis ·
November is a month of Thanksgiving and it’s a time to literally “give thanks” for the bounty in our life. We rejoice in the major highlights but in reality it’s the little micro-moments of joy that give us the strength to carry on. These precious, seemingly insignificant moments can be stored as a resource for us to draw on when times are tough. Life isn’t easy, and this is true for all of us. The immutable value we focus on in the Choose Love Movement is love, but there is another one that...

Resources that Center Indigenous Perspectives from EmbraceRace

Natalie Audage ·
From the EmbraceRace newsletter: The "First Thanksgiving" myth is part of centuries-long U.S. settler-colonial efforts to disappear Indigenous peoples and perspectives - both contemporary and historical. Countering those forces with children must be ongoing and year-round for Indigenous and non-Indigenous families. (Resources to help you do that follow.) At the same time, the "Thanksgiving" holiday itself is an opportunity for those of us in the lives of children to counter the "work" of the...

The Loss of Cultural Identity and Neurological Dysregulation

Iya Affo ·
Pre-COVID, I was invited to speak at a conference in Flagstaff, Arizona. During lunch the organizers brought dancers from the Apache tribe to perform. What we witnessed was so powerful and moving, that it prompted me to inquire about the spiritual significance of the songs and dance. They explained to me that after going to war, the warriors returned to their land and were gathered together to perform that particular dance and song. As a tribal African woman, it all made perfect sense. As...

Knowing Better

suzy deyoung ·
In 2007, at the start of my son’s fourth grade year, the teacher who I will call Ms. L, gave the class an assignment. They were to write letters to their “future selves” outlining the things they envisioned and hoped for over the course of the coming year. Ms. L. would give the letters back to the children at the end of the year so they could see how their “future selves” aligned with the vision they held at the start of the year. Though my son, ten at the time, showed no outward signs of...
