"Historical Trauma in America" series starting July 15.

Hi everyone, it's Monday!

So I know, not everyone is excited about Mondays. However, this is a very good Monday as there were no serious tropical systems that impacted the Caribbean over the weekend. (We could not say that last week after Hurricane Elsa battered several of our sister and brother islands.)

Climate related events are but one of the challenges our Caribbean region faces. Another huge issue is inherited trauma from the centuries of genocide, conquest, enslavement, exploitation and marginalisation of people groups in the Caribbean. This relates to the brutal murder of Indigenous settlers by Europeans during the "discovery of the West Indies", the millions who were brutally raped, whipped, forced to labour and died during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and the system of slavery itself, and the importation and exploitation of poor Asian labourers through indentureship.

We look forward, therefore, to the planned series of talks by PACEs Connection titled, "Historical Trauma in America". Some elements of the series may relate in part to the experiences of some of our region's inhabitants.

PACEs Connection staff member, Ingrid Ross Cockhren penned a blog post with the details recently. An excerpt is below as well as a link to her post.

"PACEs Connection's Race & Equity Workgroup will be examining historical trauma in the United States of America and its impact on American society in a series of virtual discussions.

This series will highlight each unique region within the United States and outline how unresolved historical trauma has impacted every aspect of American life and directly shapes the socio-political landscape of today as well as the overall well-being of Americans.

Discussions will make connections between America's history and the current mental health crisis, social determinants of health and the obvious disparities and inequities present in our communities today."

Be sure to register in advance for each of the upcoming sessions.
