I just finished reading Great Expectations for the second time. I could relate to it much easier this reading as I used an ACEs lens to understand Pip's experiences and challenges. Dickens knew in 1860 the effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences. It seems strange to see humanity hasn't really evolved emotionally and socially that much in 160 years. GREAT article. Love this: " At the same time, I believe we can do better. Mindfulness doesn’t need to work for everyone, but I’m convinced that certain modifications can help support survivors—at the very least ensuring that they are not re-traumatizing themselves in practice. For those of us offering mindfulness in workplaces, or other institutions, this is a competency we can develop to help make us more effective." I really believe this isn't done enough (in yoga classes, schools etc.

Joanna, such great solutions to the problem of wanting to meditate but being emotionally uncomfortable or triggered by trying to sit too long. It's possible to have the best of both worlds -- the benefits of mindfulness meditation AND mindful movement in one. Thank you for sharing your own experience and good ideas with so many of us who can use an alternative to traditional seated meditation. Yes, that is a good one! Like the author of this article, I've worked with trauma survivors for decades. I use all of the techniques he mentions—imagery, movement, belly breathing, drawing—but it's always helpful to learn the new and creative ways people are using these techniques.That's the beauty of mind/body approaches. Once you know the basics, you can use these in so many creative ways specific to the needs of the client population. Thanks again, Laura, for sharing it!
